Xcel Energy's roots go back more than 100 years through its three predecessor companies. Both Northern States Power and Southwestern Public Service Company began serving customers in the early 1890s, followed by the Public Service Company of Colorado in the early 1920s. Public Service Company of Colorado and Southwestern Public Service Company joined in 1997 to become New Century Energies, and merged with Northern States Power in 2000 to form Xcel Energy.
